If you are looking to be a great player, you cannot afford to shy away from the different types of games, strategies and lingo
that go hand in hand with the game of poker. With enough knowledge and practice, you can develop strategies that will be successful
in any kind of poker. This simple guide will provide you with all there is to know about the game and how to maximize your
potential.
The Game of Poker
1.1: Understanding the Cards and their Values.
Poker is a card game, played with a standard deck of 52 playing cards, in which players bet into a communal pot during
the course of a hand, and in which the player holding the best hand at the end of the betting wins the pot.
The cards are ranked from high to low in the following order: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. Aces
are not always high, as you wll note in the following examples. The cards are separated into four suits, each having equal
value:
CLUBS SPADES HEARTS DIAMONDS
Each player is dealt five cards. The object of the game is to end up with the highest-valued hand. From best to worst,
hands are ranked in the following order:
Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Two Pair, One Pair and High
Card.
A Royal Flush is composed of five specific cards of the same suit in sequence. The cards must be a 10, Jack, Queen, King
and Ace in the same of any 4 suits. It is the least frequent hand obtained.
While the Ace can play high in a Royal Flush, it can also play low to make 5, 4, 3, 2, Ace in what is known as the lowest
Straight Flush. A Straight Flush is comprised of five cards of the same suit in sequence, however; any five cards in sequence
will be accepted. A player is not allowed to wrap around, which means he cannot use, for example, a Queen, King, Ace, 2 and
3 as a Straight Flush. Not only is this rare, but if a player gets two of these hands in a row, he is cheating. If two players
hold a Straight Flush during a hand, the highest valued hand wins. Hand #2 would be the clear winner in the following example:
HAND 1: 4 5 6 7 8
HAND 2: 4 5 6 7 8
A Four of a Kind hand includes four cards of the same rank accompanied by a "kicker", like 4, 4, 4, 4 and 2.
The cards are ranked by their numerical value, so that 4, 4, 4, 4 and 2 beats 3, 3, 3, 3 and King. Hand #2 would beat hand
#1 in the following example:
HAND 1: 6 6 6 6 J
HAND 2: Q Q Q Q 3
A Full House means that of the five cards in your hand, three have the same numerical rank and the remaining two also
have the same numerical value. Ties are broken first by the Three of a Kind and then the Pair. So King, King, King, 3 and
3 beats Queen, Queen, Queen, Ace and Ace, which beats Queen, Queen, Queen, 7 and 7.
HAND 1: J J J 4 4
HAND 2: 5 5 5 A A
A Flush is comprised of five cards of the same suit, regardless of their numerical rank. In a tie, whoever has the highest
ranking card wins. In the example below, hand #1 beats hand #2:
HAND 1: 2 4 7 J K
HAND 2: 5 6 7 8 Q
A Straight signifies that a player has five cards in numerical order, regardless of their suits. A Straight cannot “wrap
around”. In a tie, the Straight that leads to a higher ranking card wins. In the following example, hand #1 beats
hand #2:
HAND 1: 7 8 9 10 J
HAND 2: 3 4 5 6 7
A Three of a Kind simply means that a player holds three cards of the same numerical rank, while the two remaining random
cards are not a pair.
HAND 1: 10 10 10 3 Q
HAND 2: 2 2 2 8 9
As clearly explained by the name, a Two Pair represents a hand with two sets of pairs and another random card.
HAND 1: 7 7 J J 5
HAND 2: Q Q K K A
If a player holds a One Pair in his hand, he simply has one pair of similar cards and three random cards. Again, if more
than one person has a One Pair, then the person with the highest ranking pair wins. In the following example, hand #1 wins:
HAND 1: 8 8 5 K 3
HAND 2: 2 2 3 4 5
If no players have anything of value, the player holding the highest-valued card wins, with the 2 as the lowest card and
the Ace as the highest. In the case of a tie, you move to the next highest card, and continue. This is referred to as the
High Card.
HAND 1: 2 4 5 10 Q
HAND 2: 2 8 9 10 J
Although true wild cards are rarely seen in a casino, they are a popular way to add excitement to a home game. Wild cards
introduce an additional hand, five of a kind, which normally ranks above a straight flush. They can also cause confusion when
two players hold the same hand composed of different wild card combinations. The standard rules of poker do not distinguish
between such hands, but some players prefer to rank hands using fewer wild cards above less "natural" versions of
the same hand.
